This research’s objective is to investigate the ways which by altering the name of a food product--- without changing any other product information--- influences dieters’ and nondieters’ evaluations and consumptions of the food product. The findings of 4 studies demonstrate that when food products are given unhealthy names, compared with nondieters, dieters regard these items as less healthy. Identical food products that possess a relatively healthy name are considered as equally healthy both by dieters and nondieters.
Consumers often draw inferences about the overall healthfulness of food items, using product attribute information as cues for judgment. Through food labels, objective meal sizes, nutrient content claims, and health benefit claims can provide consumers nutrition information of the food product, and this nutrition information may influence consumers’ perceptions of the healthfulness of food products. In addition, previous research has demonstrated that owing to the inferences related to food product’s nutrition information, consumers are likely to classify foods into categories of “good” and “bad”.
