However, how relevant is this scientific evidence to users of the drug itself? Whiteaker (2004) conducted qualitative research in the form of questionnaires to discover how users and non-users perceived the safeness of the drug. It was found that the two groups had different concepts in regards to the potential dangers of Ecstasy. Nearly half of the drug users questioned reporting that they felt the drug was moderately safe to use. The non-user felt it was fairly unsafe (and largely put this down to the lack of information they felt they had about the drug). In reference to the side-effects of taking ecstasy, the majority of users (64.6%) reported ‘coming down’ and 29.2% reported making bad decisions as the consequences of taking the drug. While one third of drug users reported side effects, and 43.8% of users reported bad days, these responses are unclear as to exactly what harms are being experienced by users. Less than a sixth of the respondents in Whiteaker (2004) research reported no harms, however, it is not clear how many times these people used the drug, as six of them reported that they did not use any more. Consequently they may have experienced no harm as a consequence of only trying Ecstasy the once, therefore, these results are not very representative, and it is inaccurate to generalise findings from these responses. Different responses were made for the reactions of users and non-users in response to the possibility of if they find themselves or a friend in trouble. Drug users were reported to adopt strategies such as drinking water. This may be explained by their greater education regarding the dangers of dehydration. However, it needs to be noted that this can also be a dangerous method of dealing with the situation, for example, in the case of Anna Wood, have actually died from excessive hydration
